Murray Wilkey’s family would describe him as a bit of a dreamer! But once Murray has an idea he will do everything possible to accomplish it. With the shaky support from his wife Carolyn, this dream was one to remember and definitely one that took countless hours of hard work and determination to achieve! Yes were are talking about the revival of 14 British K6 red telephone boxes.
So where did it all start? While taking a drive through the gorgeous country side in England one winter’s day 30 years ago, Murray spotted a traditional English telephone box in a garden. This image has stuck with him and on a recent trip back to England how could he resist!
The seller must have thought it was his lucky day when Murray purchased 14 very damaged and broken K6 telephone boxes, but never the less the quest had started. After a few more random purchases throughout the UK including a phone box which had once stood as a full height aquarium fitted with goldfish in the centre of a welsh town, the boxes were shipped back to New Zealand.
In 2012, the restoration process started, with help and support from son Paul and brother Wayne, the phone boxes are now in a state to share with others. Murray and Carolyn enjoy the cold beverages from their fridge inside their telephone box situated on a much used entertaining area at their place in Tauranga, so cheers to Murray’s idea and sharing it with you!
